Event Name:
FREE GCSAA Start Your Summer Right Webinar Series - Irrigation Water Quality and Soil Problems
Event Type(s):
Education
Description:
In this 90-minute webinar Glen Obear, Ph.D., will focus on diagnosis and management of irrigation water problems, which fall into three primary categories:
1) salinity (too much salt)
2) sodicity (too much sodium)
3) ion toxicity (boron, chloride)
What is the difference between these issues? What analytical tests and measurements do we use to define them as problems? What do those problems mean for you as a manager, and what can we do to manage them? Join Obear for answers to these questions and more. We will discuss the latest research on soil layering (bicarbonate, iron-cemented layers) and relationships with water chemistry. We’ll explore a testing model for the future that incorporates both irrigation water and soil testing into a more holistic view of the complex turfgrass systems you manage.
About the Instructor
Glen Obear, Ph.D., leads the R&D, technical services, and regulatory departments at Exacto, Inc. He earned masters degrees in Entomology and Soil Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Ph.D.in Agronomy and Horticulture from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Obear’s primary research focus has been interactions between irrigation water and soil chemistry, where he has studied issues including wetting agent efficacy, bicarbonate, sodicity, and the formation of iron-cemented layers in putting greens.
